He alleged that German police stormed his home in Munich in the early hours of January 22, 2025, and forcibly took him to an undisclosed location before bundling him onto a plane bound for Nigeria.

A Nigerian man, Obasuyi Bright, has accused German authorities of torturing and forcefully deporting him despite medical warnings against his travel, with alleged complicity from Nigerian immigration officers.

In an exclusive interview with SaharaReporters, Bright, a native of Benin City, Edo State, recounted the harrowing details of his deportation, which he described as a “nightmare.”

He alleged that German police stormed his home in Munich in the early hours of January 22, 2025, and forcibly took him to an undisclosed location before bundling him onto a plane bound for Nigeria.

Bright claims he was subjected to continuous torture from Germany until his arrival in Nigeria.

He claims that during the flight, he was shackled with handcuffs and chains, had an iron pressed against his neck, and was suffocated intermittently.

“I begged for mercy, but they kept torturing me. I was put under so much pain from Munich, Germany to Lagos, Nigeria. The iron on my neck and the chains on my legs caused excruciating pain. I cried and begged for mercy, but no one listened,” Bright told SaharaReporters.

Bright, who has been “diagnosed with schizophrenia,” said German authorities were aware of his medical condition and had previously advised against his deportation.

According to him, a doctor in Munich had issued a medical report stating that it would be dangerous for him to travel due to his mental health condition. The report was forwarded to the German government by his lawyer, who had been engaged to prevent his deportation.

Despite these warnings, Bright claims he was forcibly deported.

“The authorities knew I was not fit to fly, but they ignored the medical advice. They treated me like an animal,” he said.

Meanwhile, upon arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Bright said he was in critical condition and was rushed to a hospital.

However, he claims he was denied treatment and abandoned at the airport with an intravenous drip still attached to his arm.

He alleged that Nigerian immigration officials expressed sympathy but claimed they could not intervene.

“One immigration officer told me, ‘We are sorry for what happened to you, but we don’t have the power to do anything,'” Bright recounted.

However, Bright insists that Nigerian immigration officers failed to intervene when he was being subjected to inhumane treatment by German authorities.

Bright told SaharaReporters that he was abandoned at the Lagos airport.

He alleged that after being denied treatment at a Lagos hospital, he was taken back to the airport and left to lie on the floor with the drip still in his arm. According to him, a nurse later removed the drip, but Bright stated he was left to sleep on the floor until dawn.

“I woke up to find myself outside the hospital. They said my condition was too bad to treat and returned me to the airport. I was abandoned there like a piece of luggage,” he said.

“I have been living in Germany for some years now with a ‘Duldung’ (German term that translates to “tolerated stay” or “temporary suspension of deportation) because I want to start Ausbildung training and I was attending Germany school, having completed my German school I was introduced to a good lawyer in Munich Germany that will help me on my Asylum case.

“I hand over all my school certificates to my lawyer in Munich, Germany and she got attestation from different doctors which is called Reiseunfahigkeit in English, meaning this man should be restricted from flying by air because he is not fit for it

“Because of this, my lawyer fought the case in Munich and was winning.

“On January 22, 2025, they sent their police to my house at night to kidnap me and molest me. They came to tie me up and carried me into their plane while making fun of me and my lawyer, saying no one can save me.”

He informed SaharaReporters that the German immigration authorities removed him from the airport while he was experiencing severe neck pain.

He claimed they had assaulted him with an iron object, restricting his breathing for hours, and dragged the handcuffs on his legs using their feet to inflict pain. As he cried and begged for mercy, he saw people recording videos of him.

“Getting to the airport, they bundled me inside a plane and tied me. They handcuffed and chained me. They put something on me which affected my breathing I cried in pain.

“I begged the women working inside the plane to please come to my rescue but they laughed and continued to serve the police, immigration, and the doctor food and drinks.

“Then I saw a woman wearing observer uniform; I begged her to please help but she came towards me, looked into my eyes, smiled and walked away without helping me while the German immigration police and their doctor continued to molest me.

“I was put under so much pain from Munich to Lagos.

“One Nigerian immigration officer came inside and told me he was sorry but added that ‘it is good you are home now.’ I was rushed to a Lagos hospital and I was unconscious but I regained consciousness outside the hospital. When I woke up, I found myself outside one hospital. They were saying my condition was too bad and that I should be taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) because they could not handle my situation.”

“They have all the records of what happened because I was later informed that I was rescued from the hands of German authorities at Lagos airport,” Bright told SaharaReporters.

He said, “At LASUTH hospital, I was told that a deposit was required before I could receive treatment. As a result, the ambulance decided to take me back to the airport.

“Upon returning to the airport, I was abandoned with an IV drip still in my hand, which I was told had been inserted by German immigration authorities.”

Bright said later that midnight, a worker from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) arrived in a vehicle accompanied by a nurse.

“They took me back to a hospital, pleading with the staff to remove the IV drip. However, the hospital refused, stating that they could not remove a drip they had not administered.

“With no other option, the FAAN worker and the nurse took me back to the airport and laid me down, with the IV drip still in my hand,” he said.

Bright informed SaharaReporters that as dawn approached, the nurse returned and mentioned that a doctor had instructed her to remove the IV drip. She then proceeded to carry out the instruction.

“After finally getting some sleep, I woke up to see several Nigerian immigration officials at Lagos airport approaching me, offering their apologies and consoling me.

“I was then given ₦10,000 and informed that the Consul General had sent it, acknowledging what had happened to me and expressing their regret after seeing the videos.

“Now that I have miraculously survived, it is not only the German immigration, police, and doctors who should be held accountable, but also the Nigerian immigration authorities and Lagos airport officials,” Bright added.

When SaharaReporters contacted the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Kenneth Tyoapine Udo, he said he was not aware of the matter.
