Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa Enables Foreigners to Work and Resides in the Country
The Italian government has introduced a digital nomad visa, allowing third-country nationals like Nigerians to engage in highly-skilled freelance work in Italy or work remotely for an employer outside the country, for a renewable period of up to 12 months.
Approved and enacted into law in March 2024, this visa category becomes effective in April 2024. It offers a new immigration avenue for remote workers, previously unavailable, though it remains unclear whether holders can pursue local employment in Italy.
While the visa does not guarantee permanent residency, it serves as an initial step for those considering settling in Italy.
Under the new policy, applicants must earn over three times the minimum level required for exemption from health care participation expenses, maintain comprehensive health insurance, demonstrate accommodation in Italy, and possess at least six months of experience as a digital nomad or remote worker.
In addition to these requirements, eligible applicants must show an income of €2,335, equivalent to approximately €28,000 annually, and provide proof of comprehensive health insurance and accommodation in Italy.
Application Process:
1. Prospective applicants, including Nigerians and other foreign nationals, are required to submit their visa applications to the Italian consulate. Upon approval and entry into Italy, they must apply for a residence permit within eight days.
2. Non-Italians employed by foreign companies must furnish a signed declaration from their employer and provide an official police record confirming no criminal convictions.
3. Dependents, such as spouses and children under 18, of Digital Nomad Visa holders are eligible to apply for family residence permits in Italy.
4. Spouses can engage in local employment under the family residence permit.
In light of stricter immigration policies in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States, this new visa category offers a promising opportunity for Nigerians seeking remote work and residency in a European country.
