UK Hikes University Tuition for The First Time in Eight Years

Universities in the United Kingdom will in the next academic session increase tuition fees after ministers approved it for the first time in eight years.

The tuition fees for domestic students capped at £9,250 since 2017 is now set to rise to £9,535 next year, the country’s education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, announced Monday. Ms Phillipson said the 3.1 per cent increments linked to inflation “was not an easy decision”.

She added that the government would announce further “major reform” for long-term investment in universities in the coming months.

International students usually pay more than double the fees for domestic students, making them a major source of revenue for UK universities.

Canada Tightens Post Study Work Visa Rules for International Students

Canada aspirants and those who want to work after graduation, will have to note the new rules implemented by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) with effect from November 1.

Changes have been made to the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) rules for students going to Canada for studies.

After studying at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada, graduates can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, allowing them to stay and work in Canada temporarily.

Nigerian-born Kemi Badenoch became the new leader of the UK Conservatives on Saturday, succeeding Rishi Sunak, who resigned following the party’s poor performance in July’s general election.

At 44 years old, Badenoch emerged victorious in a two-candidate race against former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, securing 57 percent of the votes from party members.

She described her election as party leader as an “enormous honour,” while acknowledging that “the task that stands before us is tough.”

UK Skilled Worker Visa Extension 2024: Key Updates on New Regulations

The UK government has implemented significant changes to the Skilled Worker Visa regulations in 2024, affecting both new applicants and existing visa holders.

These adjustments, as stated, aim to ensure that international workers meet updated criteria and adapt to the evolving job market.

The Skilled Worker Visa allows international workers with the necessary skills to be employed by licensed UK employers.

The visa, which replaces the previous Level 2 visa, is available to individuals whose skills meet RQF Level 3 or higher, equivalent to A-level qualifications in the UK.
